Captain shines as QOS end year in style

Hamilton Accies were the visitors to Palmerston as we got the second half of the season underway and rounded off our fixtures for 2025. Manager Peter Murphy made one change to the starting eleven, with Mikey Hewitt returning to the side and Zander Mackenzie dropping to the bench. It was an open and even start to the game with both sides having a go but neither making the keepers work. But Queens took the lead after twelve minutes when Taylor Charters made a great run and won a corner, as Kai Kennedy floated it into the box, Matty Douglas was there to head past Jamie Smith. Match Preview v Hamilton Accies - 27th Dec 2025

We start the second half of the season with a home game against Hamilton Accies, our final fixture of 2025.

Our win over Montrose last weekend kept us in the top four and saw us close the gap on leaders Inverness. While tomorrow’s opponents now sit 8th in the league table on 16 points after twice being deducted points by the league for breach of rules. Since we last played each other Accies have had a change in manager with John Rankin quitting the club a few weeks ago.

We last faced each other on a Friday night in October when we claimed all three points at Broadwood. Jack Stott scored to give us a one goal lead at half time before, Kai Kennedy’s free-kick was turned into his own net by Cale Loughrey to double the advantage after the break. Connor Smith did pull one back but it wasn’t enough and Queens picked up the win. It was a turn around from the game at Palmerston where we ended up on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline.

Ahead of the match, Manager Peter Murphy said “We have been on a good run of form and have pushed ourselves into a decent position, but we are only at the half way point and there is still a long way to go. This weekend we face a side who don’t have their troubles to seek, but they are still the same squad of players who have done well on the park. We have set a level for ourselves in recent weeks so we need to maintain that.”

Jimmy Miller

Everyone at the club was saddened to hear of the death this morning of Jimmy Miller. Jimmy, who played for the club in two separate spells in the late 1970's and early 1980's was a regular attendee at the 70's team reunions organised by Rab Thorburn. He can be seen in the middle of the attached photo from 2024, standing in front of Nobby Clark with his hands on Alex Love's shoulders. He also attended the 2025 reunion despite having had a leg amputated before then.

Born in Greenock on January 4th 1953, Jimmy would have been 73 next month. He joined Queen of the South in 1974 having left his first professional club, Aberdeen. In his first spell he made 86 appearances for Queens, scoring twice, before moving on to Motherwell. After just over a year with the Steelmen he joined his hometown team Greenock Morton for a couple of years, the Greenock side paying a £10,000 fee for him! He was a stalwart of a Morton side starring forward Andy Ritchie which challenged for honours. He then had a year at Clyde before returning to Palmerston in 1981 for another two seasons. He finished his senior career with a year at Albion Rovers. In total he made 151 appearances for Queens and scored 4 goals.

Whilst with Queens in 1974 Jimmy was picked for a Scotland Select XI which played against Itlay in Pescari alongside his then teammate Crawford Boyd.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

QOS Christmas Spirit

As a club we have embraced the Christmas spirt and really tried to make an impact on the whole community this festive period.

All our squads and Community teams have taken part in numerous events this month to spread some joy.

Starting with our Dougie Dash in partnership with the Crichton Park run when over 200 runners and walkers helped raise money for the QOS Community Trust.

The next day we opened the Arena doors for our annual Christmas Fayre. Over 30 stall holders were there along with Santa. The kids (and adults) had the chance to spend time with the first team players too.

The community team have travelled the length and breadth of the region visiting schools to collect donations. And our players held their own collections for the foodbank and put together packages.

We have visited care homes and the kids ward at the DGRI to distribute hampers and hand over gifts.

In partnership with Dunelm, we have been able to deliver 1000 gifts to under privileged kids in our area, which is heartwarming.

And we recently held our annual Festive Friends gathering. The event held in partnership with Dunelm, Litebites, Summerhill Community centre, Lochmaben Lunch Club and the SPFL Trust provided a free Christmas meal for 114 people who are living in social isolation.

And working with Summerhill CC, Lochside Grub Club and Your Move we issued 50 festive hampers across the community.

CEO, Dan Armstrong said “This time of year is when families and friends gather to celebrate but we can’t forget that not everyone is in the same position and it’s important that we look out for each other. Our Christmas campaign has been a fantastic effort by all those involved and we thank each and everyone.

As a community club we are proud to play our part and show it’s not just about football. It shows that we can be a team both on and off the park and as well as fans supporting us, we are supporting those in our community.”

As a club we would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas.
